What to Expect During Your First Reiki Session
If you’re feeling drawn to Reiki but unsure what actually happens during a session, you’re not alone. Many people are curious, even a little nervous, before their first visit. But rest assured: Reiki is one of the most gentle, grounding, and peaceful healing experiences you can have.
Here’s a guide to what you can expect before, during, and after your first Reiki session.
Before Your Session
When you arrive (or log on, if it's a distant session), we’ll begin with a short chat. I’ll ask how you’re feeling physically, emotionally, and energetically and if there’s anything specific you'd like to focus on. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance or know how Reiki works. Just come as you are, with an open mind and heart.
Some clients like to set an intention for their session such as stress relief, emotional release, or clarity. But it’s also perfectly fine to simply relax and receive.
During the Session
You’ll lie down fully clothed on a massage table (or your own bed or couch if remote), and be made comfortable with blankets and cushions if needed. Soft music may play in the background to help ease you into a calm, meditative state.
Using light touch or hovering hands just above the body, I’ll move through a sequence of hand positions starting at the head and working down to the feet. You don’t need to do anything except relax. Some people fall asleep and that’s totally normal.
What You Might Feel
Every Reiki session experience is unique. Some people feel warmth, tingling, or gentle waves of energy. Others see colours, have emotional releases, or simply feel very calm and safe. You may feel deeply connected to your body, your emotions, or your intuition.
Whether you experience something subtle or strong, Reiki is always working on a level that’s right for you.
After the Session
When the session ends, we’ll take a few minutes to ground and talk about anything that came up for you. You might feel lighter, clearer, or deeply relaxed. Some people feel a boost in mood or energy over the following days, while others notice gentle emotional shifts or insights.
It’s a good idea to drink plenty of water, rest, and allow your body time to integrate the healing.
A Safe Space to Receive
Reiki offers a space where you can simply be without needing to fix, explain, or effort your way through healing. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, each session is a return to your inner stillness, your natural flow, and your own inner wisdom.
